Although you are required to make an animal for your Adaptation Project, Mrs. Clavell created a 3D model of a plant she created for the Devonian Period. Her plant is called Pteridophyta muscipula (the genus is a fern plant and the species is a Venus Fly Trap). The Pteridophyta muscipula lives in the intertidal zone of the ocean; between the surface and the first 12 feet. The Pteridophyta muscipula adaptations are:
• Carnivorous/ Photosynthesis - catches food and uses photosynthesis for energy. • Secretes a sap that smells to attract prey such as small fish and invertebrates. • Sap is sticky; prey are stuck attached to the plant. • Thick root "cap" protects roots from uplift from current and herbivores. • Plant can "move" its' branches to wrap around prey causing it to be permanently stuck. As the animal deteriorates, the nutrients are absorbed by the plant. • Plant's root cap has an oily covering to protect from salt, animals, and changes in the surrounding water climate. This is a symbiotic relationship it has with a species of algae. |
